338 – lovely Langdale

When I started climbing, Langdale was the nearest Lake District valley to home. The M6 ended near Carnforth, but the roads were quieter, and on one occasion, one of my mates drove us from Garstang to Langdale in under an hour.

At Elterwater, the familiar skyline of the Langdale Pikes would come into view, still one of my favourite views many years later.  It was like a second home.

About Paul Shorrock

I've been mucking about in the mountains for longer than I care to mention. I started out by walking my local hills, then went on to rock climbing, mountaineering and skiing. Still doing it, and still getting a buzz. I'm now sharing the fun, through my guided walking business (Hillcraft Guided Walking) and by writing routes for other publishers, mainly Walking World and Discovery Walking Guides. Just to make sure I keep really busy, I am also currently a member of my local mountain rescue team.

  1. Hi Paul, don’t try and get there now – all year round and all week and weekend – impossible! Shame as I miss it as I liked it too. I have some Birketts to do around Rosset Pike and I’m going to try and get down Borrowdale to Stonethwaite on the bus and go up to the Langstrathdale side of the Stake Pass instead. Sad about it though as it’s a much nicer walk from the other side…

Literally years since I’ve been there – we seek out the quieter places.
