#341 – The Cuillin Ridge, Skye

The Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye is probably the most impressive mountain range in the UK, and a place I return to again and again. So here, as a taster, are some images to tempt you to make your own visit.

About Paul Shorrock

I've been mucking about in the mountains for longer than I care to mention. I started out by walking my local hills, then went on to rock climbing, mountaineering and skiing. Still doing it, and still getting a buzz. I'm now sharing the fun, through my guided walking business (Hillcraft Guided Walking) and by writing routes for other publishers, mainly Walking World and Discovery Walking Guides. Just to make sure I keep really busy, I am also currently a member of my local mountain rescue team.

  1. If you’re going again and are going to do Sgurr an Fheadain, give me a shout as I want to do the long ridge up it! I haven’t done Sgurr na Stri yet and really want to – what a viewpoint it is! I can’t decide whether to do it from the Am Mam/Camasunary or go all the way down Glen Sligachan – the latter would be more desirable and interesting but I’m wondering whether my legs are ever going to be up to that distance again! Shame they don’t run a bus down to Elgol then I could do a traverse and go back by bus.

    • I did the Glen Sligachan option to Sgurr na Stri with Collie ‘Mist’ some years back, and it’s a great day out, about 24kms with 650m height gain there and back, but well paced.
Chris and I also did the walk from Kilmarie on the Elgol road, back to Glen Sligachan via Camasunary, about 17kms and 436m height gain. We got to the start point by using the bus from Sligachan to Broadford and hiring a taxi to Kilmarie.
You could do the long out and back to Sgurr na Stri from Sligachan, but a shorter walking option could be the bus/taxi combo to Elgol, get the boat to Coruisk and walk out of Coruisk by Sgurr Hain, including Sgurr na Stri as an add on if you felt up to it – less than 17kms to Sligachan with about 600-700m height gain.
Or am I just over complicating things 🙂

      • no that’s great info thanks. Roughly how much did you have to pay for the taxi? (shame there’s no buses to Elgol – you’d think there would be as part of the trip to Loch Coruisk tourist option)…

      • I think it’s crazy they don’t put on a daily post bus as a minimum – does everyone in Elgol own a car?

For some reason I seem to remember the taxi being around £25, which more bearable if you can share the cost. I was wondering if a B&B in Elgol would take some pressure off….?

      • I didn’t know they had accommodation at Elgol! it’s so small. But we usually get a cottage for a week if we visit Skye and prefer to be more central – like Sconser or suchlike.

Looked up at it, but never done it. Doubt I shall now. Great to see your pictures.

    • I never did the ridge in one hit (and like you, doubt that I will now) but I’ve done most of the ridge over several years. The most productive visit was when I was in the Royal Marines, with a Company Commander who loved his long mountain days – we did several sections of the ridge as part of our commando mountain training. Over 2-3 weeks I think we carried rifles for two days, the rest of the time being ‘civi’ mountaineering, albeit in green kit!
And to think, we were getting paid to do it! Happy days.

I did manage the Aonach Eagach some years ago, on a quite beautiful day, when there was hardly anyone else there. Terrific. Used to see lots of Marines training up on Woodbury Common when I lived in Devon.
