About Paul Shorrock

I've been mucking about in the mountains for longer than I care to mention. I started out by walking my local hills, then went on to rock climbing, mountaineering and skiing. Still doing it, and still getting a buzz. I'm now sharing the fun, through my guided walking business (Hillcraft Guided Walking) and by writing routes for other publishers, mainly Walking World and Discovery Walking Guides. Just to make sure I keep really busy, I am also currently a member of my local mountain rescue team.

(Left click images to zoom in, use browser return arrow to go back) The English often find the Welsh language bewildering, with an ‘alphabet soup’ approach to spelling, but in reality, Welsh is fairly simple, with rules and sounds that … Continue reading

#239 – The Spine Race 2018 – “roughing it” at Greg’sHut

The annual epic event following the 268 miles of the Pennine Way National Trail in winter has earned the Spine Race the tag line of ‘Britain’s most brutal’, and there won’t be many who would argue with that description.  Walking … Continue reading

The Montane Spine Race – 268 miles of Pennine Way – In winter! One from the archives this week – I’m away on safety cover for the race and they won’t run a power lead out to Greg’s Hut, so … Continue reading

#237 – It’s a dog’s life!

Woof woof!! – it’s that time of year again where I sneak up to the Boss’s computer thingy and write my own blog – I definitely do a better job than him! We didn’t get to play in the snow … Continue reading

#236 – Foel Fras from Aber (with a short wander in the dark)

There have been many distractions in 2017 keeping me from the hills and mountains of North Wales, the main ones being the hills and mountains of the Scotland and the Lake District.    When the opportunity for a Welsh mountain … Continue reading

#235 – The Grasmoor Hills – a quiet corner in the North-Western Fells of the Lake District

(Left click images to zoom in, use browser return arrow to go back) Having a Border Collie means a decent walk for the dog, every day.   Most of the time I’ll go with Chris, and we do a good … Continue reading

#234 – Rannerdale Knotts, Crummock Water

(Left click images to zoom in, use browser return arrow to go back) It seems odd that, surrounded by hills and mountains as we are in North Wales, Chris and I seemed to have spent more time on Scottish and … Continue reading

#232 – Carrock Fell in the Northern Fells of the Lake District

(Left click images to zoom in, use browser return arrow to go back) They say all good things come to an end, and the Scottish trip earlier in the year had certainly been a good one.   We weren’t quite finished … Continue reading
